Set the intranet as the start page in Microsoft Edge

Use Microsoft Intune to open your intranet when Microsoft Edge starts or opens a new tab, or to install it as an app on managed devices.

Before you start

  • You need permission to create configuration profiles in Microsoft Intune.
  • Your users' devices must be enrolled in Intune and use Microsoft Edge.
  • Turn on auto sign-in for your identity provider, so the intranet opens signed in rather than at the login page. See Set up SSO with Microsoft Entra ID.

Overview

These are Microsoft Edge policies, so there is nothing to set up in Interact. Once they apply, users see the intranet each time they open Edge or a new tab, or can open it from its own app window.

Step 1: Create a configuration profile

In the Microsoft Intune admin center, create a configuration profile for Windows using the Settings catalog. Search for the settings in Step 2 and add the ones you want.

Step 2: Choose the settings

Replace {{intranet_url}} with your intranet's full URL, for example https://{{intranet_domain}}/.

To do this Setting Edge policy Value
Open the intranet when Edge starts Action to take on Microsoft Edge startup and Sites to open when the browser starts RestoreOnStartup, RestoreOnStartupURLs Open a list of URLs; {{intranet_url}}
Show the intranet on every new tab Configure the new tab page URL NewTabPageLocation {{intranet_url}}
Open the intranet from the Home button Show Home button on toolbar and Configure the home page URL ShowHomeButton, HomepageLocation Enabled; {{intranet_url}}
Install the intranet as an app Configure list of force-installed Web Apps WebAppInstallForceList See below

To install the intranet as an app that opens in its own window, use this value for WebAppInstallForceList:

[
  {
    "url": "{{intranet_url}}",
    "default_launch_container": "window",
    "fallback_app_name": "{{intranet_name}}"
  }
]

fallback_app_name sets the name users see for the app. Once installed, you can pin the app to Start or the taskbar with your usual layout policies.

For every option on these policies, see Microsoft's Microsoft Edge browser policy reference.

Step 3: Assign the profile

Assign the profile to the groups of users or devices that should get it. Edge picks up the settings the next time the device checks in with Intune.
